Story Starters #1
November, or Nova to those closest to her, pushed her double stroller down the busy Boston Harbor sidewalk. She enjoyed the beautiful clear blue sky and sun on her pale skin. She was home again, and this time it felt right.
“Nova?” A familiar voice she hadn’t heard in over a year gently beckoned to her as he placed his hand on her shoulder.
She was confronted with his sapphire eyes, slicked brown hair, and a navy three-piece suit when she turned around. Precisely how she’d left him one year ago at their high school graduation. “Rhys, how are you?” She replied, flustered by his presence.
“I’m alright,” he awkwardly rubbed the back of his neck as he peered into the stroller and then studied her left hand. “Are they yours?” Rhys boldly asked.
November nodded and pulled the blanket down from the stroller blocking the sun, “this is Maya, and the other is Willow.” She proudly introduced her babies, hoping he’d pick up the names.
“I guess congratulations are in order? It looks like you’ve moved on with your life. Is the father involved? Are you married? Engaged? Dating?”
“None of the above, and my life is a complete mess. I’m moving back to Boston to start over.” She blushed, draping the blanket over Maya.
“They didn’t have oat milk, so I got you whole milk instead. I hope that’s alright with you?” A petite girl with jet black hair, a plethora of freckles, and emerald eyes handed Rhys his coffee.
“Thanks, Juni,” Rhys kissed her forehead, “I’d like you to meet a friend from school; this is November, November; this is Juniper.”
Juniper stuck her hand out, “it’s nice to meet you, November.”
November tentatively shook her hand, “yeah, you as well.”
Rhys put his arm around Juniper’s shoulders, “Juniper and I met in college, and we hit it off right away; we’re getting married in a few months.” He smiled at his fiance.
“Congratulations,” November forced a smile. “Well, I need to get going; the twins will wake up soon.” She walked away and didn’t look back.
